A youth seeking wisdom heard tale of an ancient guru who made his habitat on a mountaintop. The youth decided to search for the elder, so that he might gain insight. He traveled a great distance to the mountain over many months. And when he reached the mountain, the climb was perilous. At times the youth nearly fell to his death as he ascended. At the peak there perched a small hut, and beside it sat a wizened old man. The youth was too winded to speak at first, so he sat beside the elder staring out at the view. Hours of silence passed. Then a night and another day expired. Finally, the youth stood and lifting his pack he prepared to begin the descent.
Somewhat surprised, the old man questioned him, "Did you not come to hear my wisdom?"
To which the youth thoughtfully replied, "On the journey here, I suffered from hunger and the elements. I experienced great loneliness. I faced death, but I was victorious as I climbed. During the odyssey to see you, the doubts I had about myself were answered. I have survived a difficult thing, and now I can go forth with confidence knowing of what I am capable."
The elder one nodded. "Yes, the journey teaches you much about yourself. Do you not still seek wisdom for the world around you, though?"
The youth replied, "Indeed, I thought of many questions to ask over the last day. But as I looked from the top of this mountain, where you are so removed from the whole world, I realized that you can't give me those answers. Only one who has been there can." And the youth descended.
